The only sign in the village

The village featured in the BBC hit comedy programme Little Britain has urged the Welsh Assembly Government to come to its aid.

Three signs in Llanddewi-Brefi in Ceredigion, home to Daffyd – “the only gay in the village” – have been stolen in recent weeks. The village has gained “notoriety” and local politicians want the assembly government to stump up for the signs.

In the Assembly chamber on Wednesday, Ceredigion AM Ms Elin Jones asked Local Government Minister Sue Essex: “I am not sure whether you have ever been to Llanddewi-Brefi in my constituency, but it has received a degree of notoriety in recent years.

“The three village signs were stolen before Christmas, and today Daffyd’s phrase that he is ‘the only gay in the village’ has been voted the best ever catchphrase, which will only increase its notoriety.

“What support can you give to the community council in Llanddewi-Brefi indealing with such international publicity, and in possibly having to face permanently replacing their Llanddewi-Brefi village signs?”

In response, Ms Essex said she hoped the village could gain the benefits of notoriety without worrying too much about the downside.

“I would be happy to go with you any time to search for the signs,” added Ms Essex.

Local entrepreneur Dai “the Sign” Jones commented “I don’t know what all the fuss is. Just send Sue down to my lock-up ‘n’ I’ll sort her out with a nearly new one in no time”
